It's the doctor's job to treat your cancer, it's my job to make sure you look good while you are going through it
My mom had to have a procedure at the hospital. It was an early day. I got out of bed at 3:30am, picked her up at 5:00 am and drove her to the hospital where the procedure was being done.
The doctors and nurses were great and my mom’s procedure went well.
I had my normal clothing attire on, a Hello Gorgeous hoodie. The nurse that was taking care of my mom wanted to know what Hello Gorgeous was all about.
I explained to her what we do as an organization. That we help women with cancer smile when they look in the mirror. And then I gave her my coined phrase. I said “I believe it’s the doctor’s job to treat her cancer and my job to make sure she looks really good going through it.”
The nurse smiled at me and shared with me that they she has a co-worker, another nurse, who is experiencing something very similar. She went on to share that her co-worker is battling breast cancer and that she has no idea where to go to get help with the side effects of her cancer treatment that are affecting her appearance. She explained that when her co-worker asked her doctor, he explained that wasn’t his job, his job was to rid her body of the cancer.
My heart sank.
I handed the nurse my card and asked her to give it to her friend. I encouraged her to have her friend reach out to me and I could point her in the right direction and guide her towards the resources we have available.
So, I may have been able to help one woman with breast cancer, but what about the other 799,000 woman that will be diagnosed this year.
This has sparked an even deeper fire inside of me!!! I have realized that I can’t help the women that don’t know that Hello Gorgeous! Exists.
How do I get to these women??
If you know a woman battling cancer, please tell them about
Hello Gorgeous! And all of the resources that we have to help her smile when she looks in the mirror.
